The Vineyard
The vines were planted in 1996. Just a small plot of 8 acres by the original owners of the property. The second owners of the property maintained the vines well.
Then came us. The vineyard was something that drew us into the property. Unsure of what we would do with the grapes - sell them or use them ourselves, we've gone the route of doing both. A tonne for ourselves each year has been enough, as we start our journey, and the rest of the grapes have been sold to a Barossa Valley winery.
Our first three batches of grapes have been produced from a joint venture with the farmer leasing our paddocks. He also leased the vineyard and we had our tonne as payment for maintenance and water. From 2026 the whole vineyard was returned to our hands.
Over the course of the three batches we have chosen to have our grapes for bottling hand picked. A wonderful local group of pickers come in and pick with care, knowledge and speed. Our first batch however was picked by just us, family and friends. We soon decided that was a lot of hard work we didn't quite have time for, and found the right pickers to use on our property.
Located in the middle of the property, the vineyard sits on a gentle slope between horse paddocks and the dam paddock. The sun rising on its east side and setting on its west side, giving perfect sun light hours for the grapes to develop.
Our wine changes from year to year, just like the vineyard changes from season to season. Watering in winter is unpredictable due to the rain, and even a little unpredictable in the summer of 2024 to 2025 due to drought. We managed to water the vines with our dam water, until it ran out, but that happened after grape season.
The vineyard offers us a huge learning experience, and great entertainment all at the same time. The sights and sounds coming out of the vineyard on any given day is so different from the days prior, or the days to still come. We have taken great delight over the seasons of seeing it all!
